A blue train passing through the green hills around Ella, Sri Lanka

430 km end to end.
Nine hours to cross.

Real road, rail and bus times between the places you actually want to go — driven, ridden and walked before we publish them.

Route slip
A route that survives
Ayubowan

A route that survives contact with the island.

Most trips here break the same way. Someone looks at a map, sees an island the size of Ireland, and books six stops in ten days. Then the road to Ella turns out to take six hours and forty minutes, the southwest monsoon arrives, and half the holiday is spent in a van.

Everything here is checked from Colombo and carries a date. Where we haven't been recently, we say so.

Seventeen tools

Each exists because a guidebook, a booking site or a map app got it wrong and somebody lost a day to it.

B · Timing B1 Monsoon & dry coast Live B2 Poya & closures Live B3 Wildlife & surf seasons Live B4 Sunrise climb timing Building B5 Leech & trail forecast Live

B4 works backwards from sunrise: when to leave Dambulla to be on top of Sigiriya as the light comes up.

C · Money C1 Entry fees, live Live C2 Daily budget estimator Live C3 Cash, cards & ATM fees Building

C1 tracks the foreigner price in USD, dated. Every other site's numbers are at least a year stale.

D · On the ground D1 Menu decoder Building D2 Photo identifier Building D3 ETA visa checker Live D4 Temple dress code Planned

D1 photographs a Sinhala menu and returns English plus an honest heat rating.

A2 · Itinerary builder

The one that knows how long things take.

Ask a general-purpose chatbot to plan ten days here and it will hand you something physically impossible — Sigiriya in the morning, Galle for lunch, Trincomalee by evening. It doesn't know the roads.

Ours routes against the same surveyed matrix that powers the route slip, so it cannot produce a day that doesn't fit.

A3 · A4

The two things people get wrong about the train

Which side to sit on, and how far ahead the reservation window actually opens.

Train seat picker

Pick your leg and direction. We'll tell you which side of the carriage the views are on, and which class is worth booking.

A4 · Reservation alerts

Hill country seats open 30 days out and sell in hours.

Reserved second class between Kandy and Ella is the single hardest ticket on the island. Tell us your date. We'll email you the morning the window opens, before it's gone.

One email per date you ask about. Nothing else.

There is no bad month, only a bad coast

Two monsoons cross the island six months apart, in opposite directions. Pick your month and see which side to book.

B1 · Monsoon checker

Which coast is dry?

The dividing line runs roughly Puttalam to Pottuvil. Book the wrong side and you sit inside for a week while the other coast has sun.

A7 · Our own service

A driver who doesn't stop at the gem shop.

Once you have seen that Colombo to Ella is six hours and forty minutes, the next question is who drives it. Most visitors book through a hotel and get a driver paid on commission by every spice garden, batik shop and gem dealer on the route. Three hours of your day, gone.

  • Drivers we know personally, from Colombo
  • Fixed price agreed before you land — no en-route negotiation
  • Zero commission stops, written into the booking
  • English-speaking, licensed, insured

What that tuk-tuk should cost

The meter gets switched off for you roughly nine times in ten. Here's the number to argue from.

B5 · Trail forecast

Leech, mud and mosquito index

Nobody warns you about Sinharaja in the wet. Pick a trail and a month before you commit a day to it.

C1 · Entry fees

What it costs at the gate today

Foreigner prices, in USD, each with the date we last paid or verified it. Struck-through numbers are what everyone else is still publishing.

Four spines to build a trip around

Pick one and hang everything else off it. The commonest mistake here is trying to do two.

Add entries under Trails in the dashboard to fill this section.

D · Before you fly

Three things to sort at home

All cheaper and less stressful before you land than after. We earn a commission on two of the three, and say so.

Your ETA visa

USD 50 for 30 days. Apply at eta.gov.lk and nowhere else — every other site is a reseller charging 75–90 to fill in the same form.

Straight to the government site. Official site

No commission — there is nothing to earn here

An eSIM

Airport SIM counters queue for an hour and charge double. Install before you fly and you have data the moment you land at Katunayake.

Travel insurance

Worth it here specifically for the roads, and for anything involving a scooter — which is what most claims turn out to be.

Field notes

Written after the trip, not before it.

Every piece carries the date it was last checked on the ground. When something falls out of date we correct it in the open ledger rather than quietly leaving it wrong.

The two-week check

One email. The mistakes that cost travellers the most days.
